The customer requested widening the blockpaving on both sides of the drive and front of the bay window and front door, lifting the old “council” type slabs at the side and rear of the house and laying indian sandstone in its place.

The turf was initially lifted at front and rear, the old edgings and slabs lifted and the ground dug down to the requiered lavels;
Sub-base hardcore was then laid and compacted and the blockpaving laid to front of the bay window, in front of the front door and upto the side gate.

The indian sandstone was laid using the 560mm x 560mm slabs on a full bed of a wet sand and cement mix for the main patio area and the larger 845mm x 560mm slabs laid by the side of the house and in front of the conservatory.
A step was then built in front of the patio doors incorporating blue engineering bricks topped with indian sandstone.
Tha joints were then pointed with a stronger mortar mix, then the excess cleaned off to give the final finished look.

The customer had a few slabs laid when the conservatory was built which suited the needs at the time, but was small and didn’t meet their full requirements.
The old slabs were lifted and the grassed area dug out.

As the height of the garden was higher than the patio, decorative concrete edgings were laid to hold back the soil and give a nice finish. Sub-base hardcore was brought in and compacted and indian sandstone in various sizes was laid on a wet sand and cement base.

The slabs were cut around the drains (after the largest drain was lowered to the height of the patio) and cut around the plants to the side. Gravel was laid in the gap between the end of the patio and the decorative edging to form a drainage channel for the rainwater.

Two steps were then built in red engineering bricks topped with indian sandstone slabs. The patio was then pointed with a stronger sand and cement mix and cleaned off to complete the look .

As you can see from the before photos, the bottom left handside corner of the building was in a terrible state.
This was due to a previous neghbour building a shed up against the customers house and due to no adequate drainage from the roof over a period of time the rain washed down the walls and caused a freeze/thaw process onto the bricks.

This then eroded the bricks away until finally the building started to fall away.To remedy this the old bricks had to be carefully removed and the corner rebuilt.

Also when the neighbour had built the shed, he’d knocked out bricks so he couild tie in the floor joists of his shed. These too had to be replaced and made good along with other bricks that had perished over the years.

The joints of the entire wall were then ground out and the wall repointed, coping stones were also replaced and repointed

Wall garden repair, Bilton, Rugby

As a common feature of wall gardens over a period of the time, the soil soaks up the rainwater which penetrates the brick and a freeze/thaw situation occurs. As a common feature of wall gardens over a period of the time, the soil soaks up the rainwater which penetrates the brick and a freeze/thaw situation occurs.
This systematically blows the face of the brick until eventually the whole brick disintegrates causing the wall to collapse.
Early repairs will prevent the latter from happening and bring the wall back to its former glory

Hence the old bricks were removed and the damamged wall was rebuilt as can be seen in the photos (the new bricks will obviously stand out for some time until they weather and blend in the existing bricks)

This job required the joints to be fully raked out utilising a diamond tipped mortar raking blade, then repointed using the weather pointing or struck pointing method, leaving a neat finish, as seen.
You will also note some of the bricks had to be replaced due to frost damage over the years; the old ones are removed and replaced with new which dosent affect the structure of the building and giving the building a much nicer look.
A great deal of the older houses would benefit from this due to the fact the mortar between the bricks has been weathering away and dropping out over the years, thus leaving it susceptable to the elements causing possible damp and cold spots in the house.
Once pointed this should remedy these problems.
